This checklist is designed to help organize your move. We suggest you print this page and refer to it as you approach moving day.
In General
- Allow up to 30 days to plan your move. Local moves can be scheduled on short notice but we can not guarantee availablity when you need us.
- During the peak-moving season, June - August, we suggest you notify us as soon as possible to book your move. Most people move during the summer and on the last few days and the first few days of the month.
Week 5
- Contact Manchester Moving and Storage to book your move and handle your relocation needs.
- If your employer is moving you, contact the company to verify their relocation policy and what is or is not be covered.
- Conduct an inventory of all your belongings. Decide now what will or will not be included in your move. Make plans for a move/garage sale. Donate items to charitable organizations and get a receipt.
- Make a list of everyone you need to notify such as friends, relatives and business contacts. Update addresses and telephone numbers as required.
- Obtain a change of address book from the post office.
- Make arrangements to discontinue these services:
- Newspaper delivery
- Utilities; gas, electric, water, sewer
- Fuel oil delivery
- Pool/lawn services
- Garbage pick up
- Cable TV/Internet provider
- Any other household service
Week 4
- Finalize closing dates on your new home.
- Check school schedules and enrollment requirements.
- Do you need a new driver's license or can you transfer the registration / plates on your vehicle?
- Select a new insurance agency, bank, church, synagogue etc.
- Gather all your personal records such as medical, dental, birth, marriage, school etc. Forward school records to the new school three weeks in advance.
- Contact utility companies to see if security deposits or prepayment are required to start service.
- Make arrangements for packing. Manchester Moving and Storage can provide you with professional packers and proper materials necessary to conduct a successful moving experience.
Week 3
- Send Change of Address cards to:
- Post office
- Friends & Relatives
- Credit Cards
- Magazines
- Insurance companies
- Verify closing dates and new properties. If there is a problem, arrange for additional storage or temporary housing.
- Good time to hold your moving/garage sale and donate items to charity.
- Safely dispose of any flammable items such as paints, paint removers, gas etc., as they will be impossible to move.
Week 2
- Take your pet(s) to the veterinarian for immunization and obtain all records.
- Have your car(s) serviced for the trip. Make sure insurance cards are current and in the car.
- Drain fuel oil from lawnmowers, snow blowers and other power equipment. Drain water from garden hoses.
- Transfer/ close bank accounts.
- Defrost refrigerator, freezer and clean the oven.
- If you are moving out of a high rise building, make arrangements to reserve the elevator for the day of the move.
Week 1
- Gather all your valuables, jewelry, safe deposit box contents etc. Pack these items yourself and take them with you.
- Pack your Moving out Carton and your Moving in Carton.
- Give your plants to a new home.
- Do last minute packing of bed linens, curtains and personal belongings.
- Have Manchester Moving and Storage pack all your belongings that you are not taking yourself.
Moving Day
- Conduct a last minute walkthrough of your home with the driver. Check closets, lock windows and doors, basement, cupboards and drawers to make sure nothing is left behind.
- Obtain travelers checks for trip expenses and payment for movers.
- Consider staying overnight in a hotel or with friends or family. This will let you start the next morning fresh for your new home.
